When Should You Monetize Your Blog?

I have noticed over the web that there are many young blogs with several advertising areas in their sidebars. And I want to say with “young blogs” that they have 3 months (or even less) of age. There are people who has read my blog and they imagine that they can create a blog and minutes then, they will be selling some banners… If you are one of these people who tried that, may be you failed in your attempt, but don’t feel bad because with this post, you will learn some basic things which will help you to know when is the best time to monetize your blog and start making money with it.
The very first thing you need to know is that you cannot monetize your blog from the beginning. When you start a blog, you are like a little child who just been born. Nobody knows you, so first at all you need to gain the people’s trust and build a good readership. So then, you could start to monetize your blog with any kind of programs you can find in my money makers Section. It’s annoying when you visit a very young blog and you can hardly read it because it’s full of advertising like Google Adsense, Bidvertiser, Kontera, Private Sales… Avoid to have this behavior
Sometimes, our blogs have a big rush of traffic from StumbleUpon, Mixx, another social network or just through search engines. This kind of moments are perfect opportunities to monetize your blog and promote your private sales. By adding some areas where the people could advertise on your blog (like 125×125 pixels banners) and taking advantage of the traffic driven from external links, you could start selling your own stuff easily without problems.
So I recommend you to monetize your blog once you have established your brand and imposed your authority on Internet. When many people recognize you with your logo, that means that you had shocked them, giving you the signal to start monetizing your blog. But how can you know when you had imposed your brand? Well, when the people start requesting your friendship in social media networks, when they leave several comments on your blog, when they follow you through other blogs… That’s an indicative of that!

Thanks for send this info, i think it’s ok for us to monetize our site at the first time we build it, just don’t make our site have to many ads because the important is make the people that visit us feel comfortable

great post. I’d really have to agree with you about this.
Whenever we start something – we wait until the traffic is there to monetize it.
We still have very few ads on our blog. Just waiting to find the right thing for it.

@revenue Hey but you have a good point there, as you said the important thing is to make the people feel comfortable. So if you can do it with banners and all that stuff when your blog still being young, it’s perfectly valid.

Absolutely agree. My blog is no longer young, but I strongly believe there is no point in monetising it now.

Good advice. There are many schools of thought on when to monetize and I agree you should build your brand first then get paid.
If you plan to have advertising, I think it’s best to do it early on. Wait until you have about five good quality posts of at least 300 words or better, then add something like AdSense.
Granted, early on, you probably won’t have enough traffic to make it worthwhile, but it gets your readers accustomed to the idea that your blog is supported in some way by ads. If you add them later on, you risk alienating readers who might think you “sold out” or something.
I agree that you don’t want to clutter up your blog with ads from the beginning, and definitely have “Your Ad Here” spots. Better to not have that or to stick an affiliate ad there.
But, get your readers used to the idea from the beginning. That way, when you do add more advertising in the future, your audience won’t be as put-off by it.

Yes I am agree with you, at very beginning everyone should make readable blog means quite informative and dedicated to blogging purpose and after some time we can start advertising also.

For me, even though I have some ads up, the importance on my blog is not to make a living from it. I have many other websites I’ve developed over the years that can trickle some monies in for me.
My blog is more for posting thangs that interest me and some of my readers…nothing more. I have another blog in my local social network that I post odds and ends in including politics, news, funny stuff, etc. There is no revenue for it, but it’s a fun outlet.
Over the years I have found that the love for what I do is more important than the revenue. Money is great when it comes…but, it’s not my main focus.
I feel that if you do not believe in or enjoy what you do, there is no point. It’s a waste of time to bargain on making money when it’s somethang that you don’t enjoy doing. A bargain I’m not willing to make anymore. Been there…done that years ago.
However, with all that in mind, I strongly believe that you should always offer a way for peopes to advertise on your website. Those who like your website/blog/what-have-you can bring a few bucks your way and help get the word out about your site in the process. It never hurts to earn a few bucks here and there with somethang you love doing.
There are too many folks trying to make a living off the internet and not enough peopes that interested in giving out their money to these folks…it’s over saturated anyways. Wouldn’t we all just love it the other way around? We’d all be rich! Lol…

I think each blog is different for the best time to monetize it. If your blog is rich with content, monetizing your blog earlier makes since.
I totally agree that monetizing a blog that has no audience is a complete waste of time and thus the focus should be on getting traffic and branding. But as dcr says, you should make it clear from the beginning that your blog is and will be monetized.

Ok, so maybe I am super new to this – I use word press – how do you know how many subscribers you have – is that rss subscribers or subscribers that want to new new post updates?
Hello Katie, well to know how many subscribers you have, you need to use a service to manage your Feeds. I recommend you to use Feedburner which you can see several statistics about your subscribers… The little blue counter that you can see in the top of my blog, shows the number of RSS/Email subscribers I have.
About the post updates, it’s up to you. You can update your blog when you want, but be sure to create quality content.

I agree 100%, I have seen way too many blogs where I wasn’t sure where the main content even was. It was simply ads pasted all over the place with a few shorts posts here and there. It really is important to start building the blog, then worry about monetizing it later. Blogging is not something that happens overnight, it takes a lot of time, commitment, and more importantly, patience.
It really depends on the objective of the blog.
If it’s intended as a flagship blog, wait for brand building and referral traffic and feed readers to grow to a good level.
If it is intended to capture search traffic for a particular niche, monetize it as soon as you’re indexed and receiving decent search traffic for your keywords.
Where people run into trouble is trying to mix the two methods, especially right off the bat.
