Recently I was reading some posts via RSS, and I visited some of them to leave my comments and share my opinions. This is something very common between bloggers, and it is something very useful that can give you a good amount of traffic, with the possibility to catch new readers.
While I was doing that, I noticed the diversity in the names used by the people, and it made me think about what name is best to leave comments in other blogs. Depending the case, the impact will be different, giving you more or less reactions to your comment. I thought in three possibilities of names to leave comments in other blogs, and my options were the following ones:
- Leave comments under your own name: This is the first alternative I thought due to it is the most obvious. The problem resides in that if you leave comments under your own name, many people will not easily recognize you. I could start leaving comments under my complete name, and I’m pretty sure that nobody will know who I am. But this can be relative, I’m going to talk about it in the following lines…
- Leave comments under your blog’s name: Leaving comments under your blog’s name could be an advantage, because at the same time you are pointing your link in a comment, you are “broadcasting” the name of your blog. The people will remember your blog’s name, making it a good technique to get direct traffic. Also, this could be better if the name of your blog can give a hint of what is your blog about, giving you more traffic if you comment on other blogs related to your same blog’s niche.
- Leave comments under your brand’s name: Every blog have a brand, logically. Many of them are a contraction of the name, others a kind of tagline… The fact is that commenting with your brand’s name will cause a good impact in the other commenters, because they will be catching your brand’s name at the same time they are catching your blog’s name. Why? Because when they visit your blog, they will associate both names, something great for you.
But no matter under what name you comment in other blogs, there are some facts we need reconsider. In my case, my brand’s name is the same that my blog’s name. And also, it is how I’m named, so what’s more perfect than that? I comment under the name of “Mr. Javo” and everybody associate it with my little caricature in the header of my blog.
Also you can perfectly comment under your own name, just if you promote it. As I said, I could not start commenting under my own name because nobody will know who I am. But if you use your own name to promote your blog, commenting with it could work perfectly.
The conclusion of all this post is simple. You can post under the name you want, my tree presented alternatives are perfectly valid, but you need to be consistent. If you comment the first time under your own name, you need to keep commenting with your own name, forever! You can’t go away commenting with different names, and if you do, what is the point? Don’t you want to be recognized?

I think over time people will reconize my name
I just wanted to add further with comments. Im not sure i agree totally with other fitness guys on this.
Anyhow I enjoyed reading your post and Ill check back soon for added comments, thanks.
Its an interesting topic and should be discussed.
Good point, from this comment on, my comment name is my site name.
I actually use both. Tammy & Simple Mindz. Whatever I am in the mood for I guess. lol.
Tammys last blog post..Weekend update. Not SNL style…
At present I comment under mo own name. Good point there that if you are a new blogger, your name is not easily recognize.
For new bloggers, it is better to use blog’s name when you comment and have a better chance your link will be distinguish easily.

You can also use keyword rich names. Many blogs don’t use the nofollow tag and the link will count as a backlink. With a good keyword or phrase you can build popularity for the word/phrase and your site.
I agree with points 1 and two commenting under your name or your blog name or some variation of it. However anyone who comments on my blog with keywords is immediately marked as spam. That goes the same to anyone who isn’t a blogger and who puts in a link to a random website. No free rides at The BenSpark I tell you. Good Post Mr. Javo.
BenSparks last blog post..Randomosity…
I use both together. My name, followed by the blog name. This way it is personal but still helps with branding.
@Tom that’s right, with that structure you are *double* promoting you
.
@BenSpark I’m agree with you about the people who isn’t a blogger, but they leave comments just promoting their own sites, no matter if it’s relevant or not. I have configured my Akismet to ban these kind of people too…
@CD Rates I know what you mean. Unfortunately for you, in this blog there’s not dofollow on the people’s names at the comments.
@InfiniteWebProfit That’s truth. If you are a new blogger it’s better to get exposed with your blog’s name, and then when you get the enough popularity, you *could* think on leaving comments under your own name…
Thanks to everybody! it’s very nice to hear your voices
I is to use my name always while commenting . I think as you said commenting in the name of brand name of our site is better than using any other name, it will be very help full too

I’ll use my name this time. :O)
@BenSpark — I don’t believe it is a free ride when someone is coming to the site and taking their time to engage in the conversation and maybe even coming back to keep it going.
@Mr. Javo and others — If you have a WordPress blog there is a plug-in to remove the “nofollow” tag from your comments. After all, if someone is taking the time to comment, why not pass on some link love. :O)
ehehe Chris, I have that plugin, I lied you
. I just wanted to see your reaction
If you have the plug-in you must be using it sparingly. When I do a view source on the comments most of them have ‘external nofollow’. A few didn’t though. So you may want to check that plug-in. I sure want to count you as one of the good guys.

I hate to be a damper dude, you know I love your stuff, but this is bad advice.
98% of the blogosphere is changing their policy to REAL NAMES ONLY, or at least close, like Tom’s example.
Were getting real tired of keyworded name fields (even just a blog name) when the only reason it’s done is to try and score one more link love.
Many of us including you with do-follow, commentluv and others give plenty of love for those that respect it.
Comments are supposed to be conversational - if one thinks I’m going to reply “Hi makemoneyonlineblogging, thanks for commenting” they need to be committed LOL
Your OK, because the response can easily be “whats up Javo” or even “MJ” if I feel like it.
“CDrates” would be spammed. “ChrisCD” would be OK. On that note “Chris CDrates” would walk a very fine line and would depend on my mood at the time…that’s just trying to be slick and not doing a very good job lol.
Tom’s example might even be best for those that like to do it, since the new “keywordluv” plugin TELLS YOU to use name@keyword
Nothing personal Chris, you just provided an easy example

Great comment Dennis, and great example too… Chris, I’m sorry for what I’ve started
@MJ — Don’t be sorry. I’ll try to send some others over to leave some comments and see what they think. Great points, even if we don’t agree.
@Dennis — I’ve always heard it is better to be with the 2%. So on my blog, you can leave a keyword rich name. I’m more interested in what people have to say then what they decide to call themselves. Although, I will edit out profanity.
I have allowed *some* though if the comment is well worth it.
The problem is, then others see it and try it too, usually with crap comments.
The spam and my time deleting them, rises.

One more thought for those that don’t like keyword phrases in the name field. Would signing the post help?
And one other consideration, what if I have two identities? I may do work for one company under one name, but for various reasons, don’t want my personal work to be confused?
Signed, ChrisCD
Signing it would be another “depending on my mood” lol
As for too identities, sorry to say that’s not the blog owners concern

I always use keywords which I try to rank for in my comments and sign with my name.
And in return I bookmark the blog with onlywire.com. I think this is a win-win situation. I get a link for my keyowrd from the blog comment and the blog owner gets some links and traffic back from my social bookmarks.

Hi all great information here and good thread to comment on.
I am an adict to training and really want to get to my best this year!
Can I ask though - how did you get this picked up and into google news?
Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?
Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
Hello there, did you find this post through google news? that’s nice to hear… Well, I never summited my blog to the google’s directory, that’s a big mistake… Also. May be you got it because of the social media networks, I haven’t work so much optimizing my blog for search engines…. I recommend you to check the Improving Traffic section, there are good tips for that kind of things.
Thanks for commenting, welcome back
I use a combo because “Jason Phillips” (my name) isn’t terribly unique and being called “GorillaSushi” can only go so far when talking to more professional types of bloggers.
Another important consideration is search engine interpretations of your comments. If your blog is called “Awesome Blog” sign your comments with “Awesome Blog” too often (especially on high profile blogs), your search ranking for your own blog’s name may drop.

Interesting post. I never knew it really matters what name you should comment under.
Ever since I started blogging, I always comment under my blogger name: nepspeed82.

You bring up some great points.
Leaving comments until your Blogs name / brand is by far the best way to get links back to your site and hopefully people clicking away. The problem with this is that often times the blog owners will moderate your comment and delete it due to spam. If you leave insightful comments you’re more likely to get them published.
Using your own name makes the comments more personal and more likely to get published (less likely to get moderated as spam). As you said though, nobody knows who you are and are less likely to click on any links.
In my case, I am fine by commenting under Mr. Javo because it’s like my alias, and also, the name of my blog. But certainly your comment can be marked as spam if you comment under your blog’s name…
Nice point!
Good Post,
As obviously by this comment, I have been just using my name as a commentator. However, I think that the best method is to use the name of your blog… as this will give you the best linking value without looking like a spammer if you use a keyword phrase.
thanks for the info - so much to learn! I appreciate that you make easy to understand, plus I get great info from the responses.
We are constantly learning something new everyday, mind never stops thinking. With luck, I will share all my knowledge here, this way you will learn from me, and also I will learn from you with your comments and posts
I use my name most often. But sometimes I combo when I’m not lazy
.
But you can make it easy with Google’s autofill or Roboform
When i first started i used my blogs name but then decided iy looks a lot better when you use your own name.
And as Dennis mentioned above a lot of blogs are making this compulsary and sometrhing i will start doing on my blog shortly.

Nice choice David!
I just use my first name. I don’t want to use anything that might look spammy, and if people find my comments interesting enough I’m sure they’ll click on my name to see who I am and where I’m from.
You are right Paul. But I recommend you that if you are going to comment with your first name, you should register in every social network with the aka “Paul”. This way, the people will link your Name with your blog, but may be that name could be taken in some networks…
Exactly how it should be done Paul
MJ is also spot on. I comment under Dennis Edell and that is also my user-name for EVERYTHING.
I also had a cool DE style logo made for further branding…..which doesn’t happen to show in these comments, whats up with that Javo?

@Dennis that’s my point… I don’t know why your mybloglog’s avatar doesn’t seems there, I will check the plugin.
I use this nickname for everything, which it’s not a problem because it’s my name, blog’s name and brand’s name.
It’s not just here. I’m not seeing my avatar on most blogs that supposedly support it…dunno why.
