The New Alexa Rankings
Written by Mr Javo
Yesterday I noticed my I went from 80k to 230k in Alexa, how was that possible? Well, I went to alexa.com and effectively, something has changed.
But these new rankings are better than the old ones? I think nobody can answer that question, because for someone, “better” can be to have a higher rank to its site. But for the people who develop Alexa Rankings, the best is to give us the most accurate information.

They have optimized their code to provide to all internet community, the best rankings they can give. This don’t want to say that your old ranking was bad, it was just different. In my case, my ranking dropped from 80k to 230k, but I have not bad feelings about that. In fact, I have read that many rankings (specially of blogs) has decreased, but that is because their new algorithm.
For the new code, now they aggregate data from multiple sources, to give us a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.
With this change, there are another changes you should know. For example, now you can only see the last 9 months data, but that’s for a mistake that they are working to fix in the next weeks. In their blog, they said they going to add new features in the coming weeks and months, but they keep them in secret.
What do you think about the new ranking? For me it is ok, you know I don’t really care about the rankings…

Hey! my name is Javier but you can call me Javo, everybody does.
Well, ever since Google PageRank went down the drains I’ve been relying on Alexa and Technorati to determine site popularity. It’s quite a shame that a new algorithm has thrown all the blogs off course.
On the brightside, my ranking dropped from 379,000 to 402,000. It’s not too far. I’ll make up for it somehow.
Great post! I wasn’t aware until I read it.

I’m kinda pissed about going from 50K to 83K but I’ll get over it. It just means I have to step up my goals, right?

Yeah Jason
haha. But your ranking don’t dropped like mine
. However, if I could get 80k in 3 months from 1 million, I can reach it again (and even more) in less time….
For me javo, The new ranking system has been great. My blogs get around 900-1000 unique visitors in an average per day. And, MY alexa ranking was 120K only. But, with their new ranking system, it’s boosted upto 81K now.
Previsouly, I’ve seen a blog who used to get around 500 unique visitors and had the alexa ranking of 70K,
I knew that all the active users of entrecard.com used to have higher alexa ranking.
And, frankly speaking I’m happy with this new alexa ranking system which does collect right information I think…
Noticed the big changed in the ranking and thought must be Alexa changing something. Reading this further confirmed it. Actually you can’t be more right. I feel the most important thing is still to have people reading our content. The ranking will take care of itself.

Ironic how they change systems right around the same time Technorati announces no longer indexing blogs with a version lower then 2.3.3

I noticed that the alexa ranking for a couple of my pages had decreased tremendously… It is especially weird since my most trafficked site has a worse ranking now then a site I pretty much abandoned…
