How To Light A Fire Under A Post

March 10st, 2008

Written by Mr Javo

This post it is dedicated to all my readers who manage a blog. Thanks to Hendra for ask me for this post:

Hm…I rarely get any comment on my post.
I wonder whether someday you gonna share us your secret how to pull a commenter to a post

Here are some tips about how to get a good discussion on your blog, producing several comments on each post. The post is something unique, I have posts with 30 comments and others with just 3, and this variations are due to the information which you wrote in the post.

I can know when a post will get several comments depending to the type of post which it is. I classify the posts in two types, actives or passives. Basically if a post is active, it will have several comments. Instead if it is passive, it will have few comments. Now you know when you will have a good discussion on your post. Let’s check the characteristics of each type of post:

  • Active Post: An active post is these which lend itself to discussion, a post which express only the point of view of the blogger. When you share your ideas with your audience, exist the possibility that someone has a different idea beside yours. This is called diversity, and it is the major characteristic of the human being. If you write a post about what do you think about a service or just why do you think that my blog is good, you will get several comments of people critiquing your post, is how it works. Try in the most of possible to write posts of this nature, this way you will light a fire under each post  .
  • Passive Post: A passive post is these which simply do not cause to discuss, the reasons could be many. Generally in this type of post, you don’t share your ideas or something related to your blog’s niche, and this is why the people don’t feel some interest and don’t comment on the post. Old news and off topic posts are example of this type of posts.

Once you know the basics about the active and passive posts, you need to understand that you will not get comments if you don’t promote your posts. Being active or passive, you may submit your post to the social networks, this will attract more visitors to your blog and you will get a big burning fire on it, getting a good discussion on the submitted post.

The goal of each blogger is to get several comments on each post, but this is not possible every time. Try in the most of possible to write active posts and cross your fingers to get people commenting on it  .

Writing about touchy or controversial subjects also helps

Good points! To add to that, pick a really polarizing topic that’s current and is being discussed on other major blogs, and offer your opinion and back it up with lots of reasons. In other words, offer to continue the discussion started elsewhere on your blog.

Nice post, Javier!

Great idea Zack, you got the point. Blogging about hot topics on the blogosphere could generate a good discussion on your blog.

Yes, but if you’re blogging about hot topics at the expense of original content, it might work to your disadvantage too. :P

For me, I explicitly pose a question to my readers before or after a post to encourage comments if the topic lacks the fire of a “hot topic”.

I do get comments on my active posts, and seldom on my passive posts. Most of my passive are tuts so I only get thanks or your wrong kinda comments.. heh

Agreed, Ivy!

That’s why it’s critical that if you do choose a hot topic, you must add real value to the conversation, not just a me-too kind of post. If you have nothing to add, then it’s NOT a good idea to post it at all.

Great point!

Sometimes how the blogger writes also affect my decision of whether I’m gonna comment or not. There are some blogs I read regularly but I don’t quite get in to their writing style. It doesn’t mean they mean nothing though.
