Hey mates, some weeks ago I changed my hosting and I had to move all my websites from the old hosting to the new one. May be it’s seem like an easy task but it’s not when you are involved with databases.

The problem I got when I was moving this blog was related with its databases. I followed the steps recomended by almost every hosting but without reason, the procedure failed many times… So I decided to stop following those steps and do it my way.

Migrating a WordPress Blog

The following one is a list of steps, that you should follow to change your wordpress blog of hosting successfully:

1. Backup your data: First of all, you need to make a backup of your blog. You can do this by connecting via FTP and downloading everything in the root directory of your wordpress installation, i.e. download everything in /public_html/ or /public_html/blog, or wherever your installed wordpress. Save all those folders and files into a folder on your computer.
2. Backup your databases: This is where the recommendations of the hostings are wrong. First, log into your cpanel and go to phpMyAdmin and when it loads, click Export. After that, select the database you want to export – in this case the one which manages wordpress. By default there will be some options selected: export as SQL, Add IF NOT EXISTS, Add AUTO_INCREMENT value, Enclose table and field names with backquotes, Complete inserts, Extended inserts and Use hexadecimal for BLOB.
3. Save the database: You should not change any of the options mentioned in the step 2, it’s not necessary. I read in many websites that you should check “Add DROP TABLE / VIEW / PROCEDURE / FUNCTION” but that’s totally false! If you check that you won’t be able to import your database in the near future… So after verifying all those settings, check Save As File and press GO. Don’t check any related with compression.
4. Change wp-config.php: This file contains basic configurations of your wordpress blog. Open it in your computer and change the info related with your database name and password, user etc etc… Otherwise you will get an error of database once you upload it to the new server.
5. Upload your blog to the new hosting: Congratulations! You backed up your data from your old hosting with success, but this not ends here. Now, upload all those folders and files which you downloaded in the step 1 to the new hosting. Where to upload it? In the same directory it was in the old hosting!.
6. Create a new database: Log into the cpanel of the new hosting and go MySQL Databases. Create a new database (it will the one which will handle your blog in this new server… if you want, you can give it the same name of the old database). Add a new user to that new database with full privileges.
7. Import your old database: Go to phpMyAdmin. Then click import, selecting the database you want to fill in. In this case, select the database created in the step 5. Select the database from your computer and then change the Character from utf8 to latin1 and then press GO. Why to latin1? In order to verify this, open the backup of your database on your computer with a notepad or another text processor and search for the word “Character”. You will see the character type of your database, which is latin1 for default. Note: If your character type is another one different of latin1, you should select it in phpmyadmin or you will fail importing the database.
8. Change the nameservers: If everything is right, then you should go into your domain manager (godaddy or whatever…) and change the nameservers of your domain to point it to the new hosting. Once you do that, your domain will be bouncing between the old host and the new one, and that could take some days, it’s not instantaneously.

Recommendations

Due to the nameservers bouncing, I highly recommend you NOT to alter anything on your blog: add a new post, comment, plugin… Why? Because you won’t know if you edited the blog of the new hosting or of the new one.

When I did it some weeks ago, I had the wonderful idea of publishing a new post and the next day, many people sent me an email reporting a 404 error. They tried to visit the post through their RSS feed but they got and error because in the new server, that link didn’t exist!. For my luck, I copied/pasted the post from my Google Reader and I published it again ( yes, I’m subscribed to my own feed in order to see how things look lol ).

Also, remember that you can contact your hosting/domain manager if you have any problem – Good luck!

Another upgrade of WordPress has released today and this time it’s about a security hole. This upgrade is specially for the persons who allow open registrations on their blogs. If it’s your case, you should update your WordPress to the latest version as soon as possible. Here is the note:

If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade. With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password. Stefan Esser will release details of the complete attack shortly. The attack is difficult to accomplish, but its mere possibility means we recommend upgrading to 2.6.2.

Some time ago Yahoo! announced the launching of Yahoo! Buzz, a service which you can share stories, images or videos with million people. Now, Yahoo! Buzz is opened to the public and you can enjoy of its services, being perfect to drive traffic to a website.

If you manage a website, there are some buttons that you can add to your site to buzz your content. The people can vote up/down any article, so as you can imagine the most voted stories will be show in the home page of this service, getting exposition in front of million users.

Will Yahoo! Buzz Beat Digg?

As you see, Yahoo! Buzz is a social service like Digg, Mixx, Reddit and that kind of networks… Yahoo! has the power that any social network actually have, being this a big company with years of experience, do you think that Buzz will Kill Digg? I personally think thatt Yahoo! Buzz could be a good competitor of Digg, the categories are basically the same but there are some differences between them.

In the social aspect, at Yahoo! Buzz you cannot add comments to a story, something that reduce its points in front of Digg. You can send the stories by email to your friends or coworkers, like every network allow it.

However, I think that Yahoo! is not comming with a competition’s attitude because you can share the stories submitted on Buzz in the most popular communities: Delicious, Digg, Facebook, Propeller, Reddit and StumbleUpon. So I think they are comming with a friendly attitude, aimed to improve the web.

I think if they integrate a profile system to Buzz which you could comment, flag users and that kind of things, it would be better to them. I mean, it would be nice to have the MyBlogLog’s profile merged to this service, what do you think?

Yahoo! Buzz Plugin for WordPress

You can manually add the Buzz buttons to your site or blog. But it don’t took much time to be a plugin for wordpress, letting you to integrate the buttons to each post. Travis Johnson has created this plugin, thank you for that!

The following ones are the steps you need to follow to integrate Yahoo! Buzz to your blog:

1. Download the Yahoo! Buzz WordPress plugin.
2. Unzip the file in your computer.
3. Upload the file wpbuzz.php to the plugins directory.
4. Activate the plugin from your wordpress blog’s admin section.
5. Now go to Settings -> Buzz on Yahoo!
6. Select the look and feel of button you would like. Here the button details are given in text without graphics, so this Yahoo buttons page would be of your help.
7. That’s it, you would see the Yahoo buzz button appearing at bottom of each of your posts.

Something I think it can be improved in this plugin is to have options like the Sphinn button plugin, which you can place the button at the top, botton left/right of your posts.

Hey bloggers, yesterday I found an excellent plugin for wordpress. This time is the turn of the Permalinks Migration Plugin, which you can safely change your permalink structure without breaking the old links to your website, and even doesn’t affect your search engine rankings.

As you may know, the default permalinks structure of wordpress is /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/, something which is not the best for search engines…

As I comment in my preview post Setting Up Permalinks On WordPress For SEO Success, the best structure is  /%postname%/ because the search engines will find quickest the slug or name of your posts, which generally is the title of the post.

In my preview post, some people recommended to add an .html, .htm or .php extension at the end of the postname. That’s because a permalink ended on slash will be a directory and the permalink ended on an extension will be a file, and that could be misunderstood by non-advanced search engines. However, I decided to change my permalinks structure to /%postname%/, and just a plugin could make it possible.

How The Plugin Works?

There is a way to tell the search engines (and browsers) that the page has permanently moved, and that the old address should be replaced by the new one. It’s called a “301 Redirect”, also known as a Permanent Redirect. When you do this, search engines will update their indexes quickly and you won’t lose your pagerank. You will continue receiving traffic as though nothing had changed. This works for search engines, bookmarks, and links from other sites.

By installing this plugin, you can change the permalinks structure without losing traffic because when an user or spider visit your site through an old permalink, the plugin will redirect them to the new permalink of the same post.

Installation

1. unzip and upload the file into your wp-content/plugins/ directory.
2. Activate it on your Admin Panel->Plugin Management page.

Usage

1. goto admin panel->options->PermalinksMigration.set the old permanlink structure of your site.
2. goto admin panel->options->Permalinks.change the new permalink structure to what you want.
3. Done,enjoy it.
