At BC, I have almost 300 persons added as friends, and I keep a good relationship with many of them. I write personal shouts to people I find interesting, and also join discussions on blog catalog, so I don't consider myself a spammer. There are some folk on BC who have over 10k friends in their profile - wow. I doubt if they have personally replied to every single blog. So once again it's a balance between building up a quality network of contacts and not being construed as a spam blogger.
