6 Ways To Increase Your RSS Subscribers

April 5th, 2009

Written by Mr Javo

For any blogger is pretty important to have subscribers. Who would like to write when nobody reads the content? I’m sure not you… By increasing the amount of subscribers of your blog, you create certain loyalty between you and yours readers. That sense of loyalty will attract them each time you write a new blog post.

Once you have hundreds of subscribers it becomes easier, but how do you get your first 100 subscribers? And even more important, how do you keep attracting more and more people to your blog?

Now I’m going to list the most common things you can do in order to boost that RSS counter:

  • Be persistent: The best way to attract loyal readers when you create a new blog is being persistent. Writing new content as fast as you can will be key to succeed. At least during the first 2 or 3 months of blogging you need to write new content constantly, lets say 5 posts a week. By doing that, people will note your dedication and will start following you.
  • Write good content: This has a much to do with the first point. You can write 5 posts a day if you want, but if they say nothing interesting you will lose credibility and potential readers. Remember, is better quality than quantity. If you can only write 2 or 3 posts a week is fine, but make them bloody good!
  • Socialize: This is the key of blogging. You have to socialize with other bloggers in your niche in order to know who your neighbors are. This way, you could be linked by them in link sharing posts for example, giving you exposure in front their readers… Also, using services like Twitter or StumbleUpon can expand your brand as you can’t imagine, attracting several people to your blog.
  • Comment in other blogs: This is part of socializing. If you comment in other blogs with certain periodicity, you will attract people’s attention and they will visit your blog to know who you are and what you do. Of course, remember to leave good comments and not just a “good post”.
  • Make blog contests: This is a well known blackhat trick. Contests are loved by everybody, who doesn’t like to win something for free? This is excellent to attract new readers and increase your readers, especially if you promote it well… I really recommend you to read this article in order to know more details about this matter.
  • Write guest posts: Like the last point, you can do this when you have certain credibility on the web. By writing articles in other blogs related to yours can really boost your entire blog. Imagine that you post something in a blog with 500 readers, and lets say that just 200 know about your blog. The other 300 subscribers will visit your blog at least once to see what you write, with good chances to become loyal readers. Just remember, prepare and publish a punch of good posts on your homepage before writing the guest post to cause a better impression.

In addition of those 6 ways there are others that you will discover with the passing of time, they’re somewhat intuitive. Also remember to be patient, you won’t get 100 readers in a single day, increasing the subscribers of your blog is like a marathon…

Well I talked enough for now, I would love to know your techniques to increase your RSS subscribers, so feel free to drop me a comment for sharing your tips!

you’re right about once you have a ton of subscribers it gets easier and easier.

I think when people see a subscriber count in the hundreds, they think “hey, this guy must know what he’s talking about, I’d better subscribe”

Maybe there’s an argument for “faking it till you make it”?

Comment by Mr Javo | 6 Apr 2009 at 23:12

hahaha that’s totally truth! people tend to follow bloggers with lots of subscribers…

I agree. It’s like a snowball effect: the more there is, the more that comes.

It’s also a good idea to send a ‘welcome’ mail to people when they comment on the blog for the first time. The welcome mail can also invite them to subscribe to your blog.

Secondly, subscription option should be highlighted by the theme.

BTW, guest posts are indeed a cool way to get some potential subscriber your way.

I think content is always king. If you have good content people will always return.

Content has a lot to do with keeping people on your site. But people won’t discover that you have great content unless you start to share it through any of those ideas listed by Javo.

All 6 are great ideas and especially the one about participating actively in other peoples blogs. It’ll take some time when you start out but persistence is the key (as you also mention).

For more ideas I did this search in Google. I think that will give you plenty of ideas to work on: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+get+more+rss+subscribers&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Is entrecard one of those social sites?

Comment by Mr Javo | 17 Apr 2009 at 18:58

Hello!

Yes, entrecard can be included on that list… Dropping cards gives you exposure, but sometimes it’s kinda spammy and also, it increases the bouncing rate of your page/blog… That’s why I removed it.

Socializing is always the hardest part for me, but, unfortunately, it’s the most important part of getting noticed.

Comment by SD @ Discount Airfares | 29 Apr 2009 at 21:07

The socialising one is good – since I started using twitter, I’ve got over 100 new subscribers from tweeting just a couple of times a day

Excellent points. It certainly does seem like a blog is a great way to attract visitors and get them to come back regularly. Loyalty of readers is tough to maintain — takes quality content, like your posts on here!

Remember to inform your readers every once in a while that there in fuck is such a feature. Many people just don’t know there’s a possibility of subscribing to the rss feed.

Guest posting is probably the most under used strategy to get more readers for your blog. Not only do you get an audince for your article on another blog you also get free backlinks.
